'Satisfied': Nicky Hayen's verdict on Burnley's friendly draw with Espanyol

Nicky Hayen’s verdict on Burnley’s 2-2 friendly draw with Espanyol

Nicky Hayen was left with a “satisfied” feeling despite his Burnley side being denied a first win of pre-season.

Building on from Sunday’s positive display against Ajax, the Clarets delivered another encouraging showing in their first Turf Moor outing of the summer against Espanyol.

Having previously spoken of his desire to win every game he’s a part of, Hayen could be forgiven for feeling disappointed in the end scoreline - especially with the manner of both goals.

But Burnley’s boss remained hugely encouraged, telling the Burnley Express: “I'm not annoyed. It's unlucky, let's say like this.

“The two goals that we concede are too easy, especially the first one where we take too much risk. That is something that we have to avoid, especially in our own half.

“The second one, you have to jump, you have to go into the duel. Even if you cannot win the duel, you cannot make the opponent too easy. Even if you're a young guy. But okay, we learn from it.

“We can give the feedback after the game and it's not only the feedback we want to give, but also the feed-forward. Like how can we do things better so that it doesn't happen again.

“But at the end, again, it's a satisfied feeling after the game, especially for our own fans. I think they also enjoyed watching the game. We see a lot of principles coming back already and I hope we can only improve.”

Hayen received a warm welcome on his first Turf Moor experience and was hugely thankful for the support that came his way.

“Really nice,” he added. “I also felt the support from them. It's always nice coming here as a manager and feeling the support.

“This is also the thing that we want to give back after the game. Immediately, we went with the group towards the supporters, to the fans, to thank them. To show our respect that they were in the stadium.

“This is what we want to keep on doing. Bring the energy into the stadium. You see, if you want to play a certain style of football, they like it. They support, they cheer. That's the vibe that we want to bring in this nice stadium.”
